Obiettivo è che lo/la studente/essa sappia discutere alcuni nodi teoretici fondamentali della filosofia della mente sviluppata nell’ambito della scuola di Pittsburgh, in particolare: rapporto mente-mondo, ruolo epistemico dell’esperienza, rapporto fra spazio delle ragioni e sfera della natura.
The aim is for the student to be able to discuss some fundamental theoretical issues of the philosophy of mind developed within the Pittsburgh school, in particular: the relationship between mind and world, the epistemic role of experience, the relationship between the space of reasons and the sphere of nature.
Il corso consisterà di lezioni frontali, ma la verifica delle conoscenze non avverrà soltanto in occasione dell’esame orale finale, bensì anche durante il corso con l’invito costante a partecipare alla discussione con domande e opinioni. Inoltre si offrirà a chi vuole cimentarsi la possibilità di preparare un elaborato scritto.
The class will consist of lectures, but knowledge will be assessed not only during the final oral examination, but also during the class with the constant invitation to participate in the discussion with questions and opinions. In addition, those who wish to try their hand will be offered the opportunity to prepare a written paper.

Nessun prerequisito. Si richiede però frequenza assidua e disponibilità a mettersi alla prova partecipando attivamente alla discussione.

Il corso si dividerà in tre parti:
- Parte introduttiva: nelle prime lezioni si discuterà della nascita della filosofia della mente come disciplina autonoma, soffermandosi sul contributo di Sellars e sulla nascita della tradizione della cosiddetta Scuola di Pittsburgh
- Parte analitica: lettura estesa ed integrale di Mente e mondo di John McDowell
- Parte critica: considereremo alcune obiezioni che sono state mosse a McDowell nel corso degli anni (per esempio da Brandom, Houlgate e Dreyfus)
The class will be divided into three parts:
- Introductory part: in the first lectures, the emergence of the philosophy of mind as an autonomous discipline will be discussed, focusing on Sellars' contribution and the birth of the tradition of the so-called Pittsburgh School
- Analytical part: extended and integral reading of John McDowell's Mind and World
- Critical part: we will consider some objections that have been made to McDowell over the years (e.g. by Brandom, Houlgate and Dreyfus)
Il rapporto fra mente e mondo nella prospettiva di John McDowell
Obiettivo del corso è esaminare la posizione filosofica presentata da John McDowell nel suo oramai classico testo Mente e mondo (1994). Si discuterà del rapporto fra concetti e intuizioni, dell’estensione del concettuale e della possibile di una dimensione non-concettuale, del rapporto fra spazio delle ragioni e natura, del ruolo dell’azione e della distinzione fra animali razionali e non. Si indagheranno le interpretazioni che McDowell propone di Sellars, Kant, Hegel, Wittgenstein, del suo confronto con Davidson e con Evans, della messa in discussione delle sue posizioni da parte di pensatori come Brandom, Houlgate e Dreyfus, della revisioni cui McDowell sottopone le sue stesse tesi.
Mind-Wold Problem in McDowell's perspective
The class aims to examine the philosophical perspective presented by John McDowell in his now classic essay Mind and World (1994). The relationship between concepts and intuitions, the extension of the conceptual and the possibility of a non-conceptual dimension, the relationship between the space of reasons and nature, the role of action and the distinction between rational and non-rational animals will be discussed. We will investigate McDowell's interpretations of Sellars, Kant, Hegel, Wittgenstein, his confrontation with Davidson and Evans, the questioning of his positions by thinkers such as Brandom, Houlgate and Dreyfus, and the revisions to which McDowell subjects his theses.
