Lo studente potrà acquisire conoscenze sullo sviluppo della città nel mondo antico in riferimento alla pianificazione urbana, ai sistemi difensivi, alle principali tipologie di edifici e alle loro caratteristiche architettoniche, all'organizzazione degli spazi pubblici e privati nelle loro relazioni topografiche e funzionali.
The student will acquire knowledge about urban development around the ancient world. The course will focus on urban planning, defensive systems, the main types of buildings and their architectural characteristics, the organization of public and private spaces in their topographical and functional relations.
Durante la discussione in aula e in sede d’esame orale sarà verificata la conoscenza della materia, con una particolare attenzione sulla capacità di sapersi orientare nel quadro teorico di riferimento. Lo studente dovrà dimostrare le sue conoscenze attraverso un linguaggio appropriato, maturando uno sguardo critico sui temi trattati durante il corso. A tal fine la partecipazione in aula sarà valutata positivamente
During debates in the classroom and during the oral exam, the student’s knowledge of the subject will be verified, with particular attention to the ability to apply the theoretical framework of reference. The student will have to demonstrate her/his knowledge using appropriate language, having gained a critical
understanding of the topics covered during the course. To this end, participation in the classroom will be positively evaluated.
Alla fine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di analizzare e interpretare la struttura urbanistica dei centri del Mediterraneo greco e romano, negli aspetti topografici e funzionali.
At the end of the course the student will acquire skills to analyze and interpret the urban structure of the Greek and Roman Mediterranean cities, focusing on topographical and functional aspects.
Le capacità saranno verificate attraverso l’analisi in aula di casi empirici del tema affrontato. I criteri di valutazione saranno: la capacità di comprensione e di esposizione; l’autonomia di giudizio; le abilità argomentative. Ai fini di affinare tali capacità la partecipazione in aula è raccomandata, da interpretare come un’opportunità di apprendimento. Le capacità saranno sottoposte a verifica anche durante l’esame
finale, seguendo i criteri appena esposti.
The students’ abilities will be verified through analyses of empirical cases of theme. The evaluation criteria will be: the ability tounderstand and expound on a given topic; the ability to formulate independent evaluations; argumentative skills. In order to refine these skills, participation in class activities is warmly recommended, and should be viewed as a learning opportunity. Skills will be tested
at the final exam, following the criteria set outabove.
Attraverso le attività di reporting individuale e di gruppo previste, l'insegnamento si propone di favorire lo sviluppo di condotte accurate, attente e appropriate, orientate alle sfide di contenuto, metodo e tempistiche insite nelle consegne ricevute dal docente.
Through the planned individual and group reporting activities, the teaching aims to encourage the development of accurate, careful, and appropriate conduct, oriented to the challenges of content, method, and timing inherent in the deliveries received from the teacher.
L’acquisizione dei comportamenti verrà rilevata durante tutta la durata del corso.
Nello specifico saranno valutati positivamente i seguenti comportamenti: la puntualità nelle consegne, la qualità dei contenuti degli elaborati scritti, la partecipazione in aula e la proposta di temi di discussione, la gestione e organizzazione delle fasi progettuali.
The demonstration of appropriate behaviour will be observed throughout the duration of the course. Specifically, the following behaviour will be positively evaluated: handing in assignments on time, the quality of the contents of written assignments, participation in the classroom and the proposal of discussion topics, the management and organization of the project phases.
Si raccomanda la conoscenza della storia e dell’archeologia greca e romana e della geografia del mondo antico. Questi forniranno i principali metodi e strumenti per comprendere in modo più approfondito i temi dell’insegnamento in oggetto.
Knowledge of Greek and Roman history and archaeology, of the geography of the ancient world is recommended. They will provide the main methods and tools to better understand the module content.
Il corso prevede lo svolgimento di 18 lezioni frontali di 90 minuti ciascuna, con proiezione di slides.
Il corso si svolgerà nella maggioranza dei casi in forma di lezioni frontali; sono anche previste lezioni in forma seminariale con esercitazioni. In questa sede gli studenti potranno presentare e discutere delle relazioni.
Durante il corso verranno impiegati video, slide e immagini a sostegno degli argomenti trattati. Le immagini che saranno proiettate durante le lezioni saranno a disposizione degli studenti, che potranno scaricarle dalla pagina del corso su Moodle (http://polo4.elearning.unipi.it ) utilizzando le proprie credenziali di Ateneo.
Una parte dei saggi previsti nel programma sono in lingua inglese; tuttavia, la loro
spiegazione e l’intero corso saranno tenuti in italiano.
Sul blog di Moodle saranno caricate di volta in volta le comunicazioni docente-studenti.
E' prevista, come complemento alle lezioni in classe e alle letture, la vista al Parco Archeologica di Ostia Antica e in particolare al porto imperiale di Traiano.
The course includes 18 lectures of 90 minutes each, with slide show.
The module will take the form of frontal lessons supported by seminars with practical applications. Here students will be able to present and discuss reports.
During the module, videos, slides and images will be used to support the themes covered. The slides will be available to the students, who can download them from the course page on Moodle (http://polo4.elearning.unipi.it) using their University credentials.
Some of the readings included in the program are in English; however, the lectures will be
held in Italian.
On the Moodle blog will be loaded from time to time the teacher-student communications.
A visit to the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park and in particular Trajan's imperial port is planned as a complement to the classroom lectures and readings.
Si segue lo sviluppo della città nel mondo antico sottolineando i tratti comuni e le differenze nelle diverse culture, in riferimento alla pianificazione urbana, ai sistemi difensivi, alle principali tipologie di edifici e alle loro caratteristiche architettoniche, all'organizzazione degli spazi pubblici e privati nelle loro relazioni topografiche e funzionali.
Nell'a.a. 2023/24 sarà riservata una particolare attenzione all’analisi delle infrastrutture portuali marittime e fluviali, con particolare riferimento al sistema portuale di Roma e di Atene.
Lo studio della forma urbana nell'antichità contribuisce alla riflessione sull'Obiettivo 11, Città e comunità sostenibili: “rendere le città inclusive, sicure, resilienti e sostenibili” (Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile dell'Agenda 2030).
The aim of this course is to show the urban development in the ancient world. In particular, it will highlight urban plannings, defense systems, the main types of buildings and their architectural characteristics, public and private space organizations and their topographical and functional relations.
In A.Y. 2023/24 special attention will be given to the analysis of maritime and river port infrastructures, with particular reference to the port system of Rome and Athens.
The study of urban form in antiquity contributes to the consideration of Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities: "making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable." (Sustainable Development Goals SDGs Agenda 2030)

Students are strongly encouraged to attend all classes: the exam includes topics that are not dealt with in the bibliography.
Students who cannot attend should contact the instructor to define the topics for their written paper.
La prova d’esame si svolge in forma orale. Lo studente dovrà rispondere correttamente ad almeno tre domande proposte dalla commissione d’esame, dimostrando una adeguata capacità di collegamento delle tematiche affrontate durante il corso.
I non frequentanti, dovranno, inoltre presentare e discutere una breve relazione su un tema concordato con il docente.
The exam is oral. The student must answer correctly at least three questions proposed by the examination board, demonstrating an adequate ability to make connections between the key themes addressed in the module.
Non-attending students, must, in addition, present and discuss a short paper on a topic agreed upon with the lecturer.
