Al termine del corso gli studenti saranno in grado di utilizzare con profitto i principali strumenti della ricerca filologica in ambito latino, come – tra gli altri – il Thesaurus Linguae Latinae, l’Oxford Latin Dictionary, le grammatiche di riferimento, i commenti scientifici e le principali banche dati digitali a tema bibliografico e lessicale. Lo svolgimento di una relazione seminariale su un passo della Vita Neronis di Svetonio permetterà ai/alle partecipanti di affinare le competenze richieste in vista della preparazione della tesi triennale, rafforzando le loro capacità critiche e argomentative.
The students who successfully complete the course will be able to profitably use the fundamental tools of philological research concerning Latin literature and language, such as - among others - the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae, the Oxford Latin Dictionary, reference grammars, scientific commentaries and the main digital databases. The preparation of a seminar report on a passage from Suetonius’ Vita Neronis will enable participants to hone the skills required in preparation for the BA thesis, strengthening their critical and argumentative abilities.
Il corso ha carattere seminariale. Dopo alcune lezioni di natura introduttiva tenute dal docente, a ciascuno studente verrà assegnato un passo (uno/due capitoli) della Vita Neronis di Svetonio da commentare sotto il profilo critico-testuale, stilistico, storico e letterario con l’ausilio dei commenti scientifici, della bibliografia di riferimento e dei principali strumenti di consultazione.
The course is a seminar. After a few introductory lectures, each student will be given a passage from Suetonius’ Vita Neronis (one or two chapters) to be commented on from a textual, stylistic, historical, and literary point of view with the help of scientific commentaries, scholarly bibliography and fundamental philological tools.
Il corso mira ad affinare le capacità di analisi linguistica, stilistica e tematica dei testi latini e a introdurre gli studenti ai metodi della ricerca filologica. In conformità con gli obiettivi del progetto di eccellenza CECIL, particolare attenzione sarà dedicata all’appropriatezza linguistica e alla precisione semantica e lessicale delle relazioni presentate, viste in funzione propedeutica rispetto alla stesura della tesi triennale.
The course aims to develop the skills of analysing Latin texts and to introduce the students to the methods of philological research. In accordance with the objectives of the CECIL project, special attention will be paid to the linguistic appropriateness and semantic and lexical accuracy of the papers presented, which will be seen as a preliminary exercise with respect to the writing of the BA thesis.
Gli studenti dovranno svolgere una relazione seminariale sul passo assegnato e partecipare attivamente alla discussione dei seminari degli altri partecipanti.

Data la natura seminariale del corso, la frequenza è caldamente consigliata e deve accompagnarsi a una partecipazione attiva alla discussione in classe.

La valutazione terrà conto, oltre che della relazione seminariale svolta da ciascuno studente, anche della sua attiva partecipazione alla discussione in classe nell’ambito delle relazioni dei colleghi.
The evaluation will take into account not only the seminar report carried out by the students, but also their active participation in the class discussion.
Il corso, rivolto espressamente agli studenti del curriculum classico, presuppone una adeguata preparazione istituzionale per quanto riguarda sia la lingua latina sia la storia della letteratura latina. I partecipanti dovranno aver sostenuto gli esami di Lingua e Letteratura Latina I e II, come previsto dal regolamento del corso di laurea.
The students should have good knowledge of Latin language and literature and should have passed the exams of “Latin language and literature” I and II.
Le lezioni si svolgono in lingua italiana.

Il seminario sarà dedicato alla lettura della Vita Neronis di Svetonio. A ciascun partecipante verrà assegnato con il dovuto anticipo un passo corrispondente a uno o due capitoli della biografia neroniana, che sarà oggetto del seminario. Verranno prese in esame, tra le altre, questioni di natura critico-testuale, con una ricognizione a vasto raggio della vicenda ecdotica dell’opera di Svetonio, e storico-letterario, proponendo confronti dettagliati tra i dati che emergono dalla biografia svetoniana e quelli della tradizione storiografica precedente e successiva, con particolare riferimento a Tacito e Cassio Dione. Strumenti di partenza imprescindibili saranno i commenti scientifici alla Vita a cura di K. R. Bradley (Bruxelles 1978), W. Kierdorf (Paderborn 1992) e B. H. Warmington (London 1999).
The seminar will be devoted to Suetonius’ Vita Neronis. Each participant will be assigned in due advance a passage comprising one or two chapters of the text that will be the subject of their seminar. Both the ecdotic history of Suetonius’ work and the literary framework of the Vita will be examined, by offering a detailed comparison between the biographer’s narrative and the historiographical tradition, especially Tacitus and Cassius Dio. Essential starting tools will be the scientific commentaries on the Vita Neronis edited by K. R. Bradley (Bruxelles 1978), W. Kierdorf (Paderborn 1992) and B. H. Warmington (London 1999).

Kaster, Oxford 2016, inscindibile dal commento critico-testuale dello stesso editore, Studies on the Text of Suetonius’ De vita Caesarum, Oxford 2016. Dato il carattere seminariale del corso, la frequenza è fortemente raccomandata. I non frequentanti saranno comunque tenuti a tenere una relazione sul passo loro assegnato alla presenza della commissione d’esame, e in quella sede aggiungeranno alla lettura e traduzione della Vita Neronis di Svetonio la lettura integrale di:

Non-attendees will still be required to give a report on the passage assigned to them, and on the examination date they will add to the reading and translation of Suetonius’ Vita Neronis the full reading of:

Gli studenti sono tenuti a presentare una relazione seminariale sul passo loro assegnato; la relazione sarà incentrata sulla contestualizzazione, lettura e traduzione del passo, del quale andranno inoltre analizzati in dettaglio gli aspetti problematici più rilevanti, che siano di natura critico-testuale, interpretativa, letteraria, storica o erudita. La frequenza assidua e la partecipazione attiva alle lezioni introduttive e ai seminari delle/dei colleghe/colleghi sono parti integranti del processo valutativo.
Oltre alla relazione seminariale, gli studenti prepareranno lettura e traduzione dell’intera Vita Neronis di Svetonio, la cui conoscenza verrà verificata in sede di esame.
Students are required to present a seminar relation on the passage assigned to them; the relation will focus on the contextualization, reading and translation of the passage, the most relevant problematic aspects of which should also be analyzed in detail, whether textual, interpretative, literary, historical or erudite in nature. Assiduous attendance and active participation in the introductory lectures and seminars of the colleagues are essential parts of the evaluation process.
Together with their seminar, students will have to prepare a thorough reading and translation of the entire Vita Neronis, on which they will be tested.
Studentesse e studenti interessati a partecipare al corso sono invitati a contattare preventivamente il docente per mail (alessio.mancini@unipi.it) già a inizio settembre, e comunque a manifestare quanto prima la volontà di partecipare al seminario.
Le lezioni avranno inizio lunedì 18 settembre 2023 in aula Ricci 6. Giorni, orari e aule assegnati al corso sono indicati al seguente indirizzo.
Secondo quanto stabilito dall'Università di Pisa per la didattica dell'A.A. 2023/2024, le lezioni si terranno ESCLUSIVAMENTE IN PRESENZA e NON verranno trasmesse in streaming né registrate. Gli studenti sono comunque invitati a unirsi al team del corso sulla piattaforma Microsoft Teams, che verrà impiegato per comunicazioni, condivisione di materiale didattico, ricevimento col docente etc.
