La letteratura anglofona postcoloniale completa l'offerta formativa standard relativa agli insegnamenti di Letteratura inglese. L'insegnamento si propone di fornire conoscenze sulla teoria postcoloniale ed ecocritica e di introdurre diverse tradizioni letterarie di area anglofona in chiave ambientalista. In particulare, l'insegnamento di Letteratura dei Paesi di lingua inglese si propone di fornire competenze sulle letterature di paesi e aree geografiche quali Canada, Africa, Caraibi, Oceania e India, in un'ottica comparata e interdisciplinare. I testi trattati e gli autori scelti aiutano lo/la studente/studentessa ad acquisire conoscenze dettagliate e approfondite sui paesi/continenti di area anglofona, e sull'analisi testuale e stilistica applicata alla letteratura in chiave ambientalista.
The course of Literatures in English completes the standard educational approach relating to the teachings of English literature. The course aims to provide knowledge on postcolonial and ecocritical theory and to introduce different literary traditions of the English-speaking area through an environmentalist key. In particular, the teaching of Literatures in English aims to provide skills on the literatures of countries and geographical areas such as Canada, Africa, the Caribbean, Oceania and India, in a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. The texts handled and the authors chosen will help the student to acquire detailed and in-depth knowledge on the English-speaking countries / continents, and on the textual and stylistic analysis applied to literature from an environmentalist point of view.
La verifica delle conoscenze sarà oggetto della valutazione dell'elaborato che gli studenti, individualmente o suddivisi in gruppi, dovranno presentare durante il corso.
L'esame finale costituisce momento primario di accertamento delle conoscenze acquisite.
Academic progress will be monitored and verified from the written paper that every student or students’ groups will present.
The final exam constitutes a primary assessment for the acquired knowledge.
La/lo studente possederà i fondamenti teorici necessari per affrontare i testi postcoloniali di lingua inglese in maniera non impressionistica o superficiale. Conosce inoltre a grandi linee la storia della colonizzazione e decolonizzazione delle principali ex-colonie britanniche, i principali autori e movimenti delle letterature postcoloniali di lingua inglese, sa inserire i testi primari nel loro contesto storico, geografico e politico ed è in grado di offrirne una lettura in chiave ecocritica
The student will acquire the theoretical foundations necessary to deal with English Postcolonial texts in a non-impressionistic or superficial manner. He can also broadly describe the history of colonization and decolonization of the main British ex-colonies, the main authors and movements of the English-language postcolonial literatures, knows how to insert primary texts in their historical, geographical and political context, and is able to offer a reading from an ecocritical point of view.

La conoscenza dei principali autori e movimenti della letteratura inglese e/o postcoloniale costituisce un importante prerequisito per seguire il corso con profitto. Coloro che ritenessero di dover colmare delle lacune in tali ambiti sono invitati a segnalarlo tempestivamente alla docente che individuerà un percorso didattico ad hoc.
A general knowledge of the main authors and movements of English and / or postcolonial literature is an important prerequisite for following the course with profit. Those who think they have to fill in gaps in these areas are invited to promptly report it to the teacher who will identify an ad hoc educational path.

Si ricorda che questo è un esame di letteratura, non di lingua inglese. Per valutare al meglio le competenze acquisite dagli studenti italiani e il loro spirito critico, la prima parte dell'esame e la discussione di almeno un'opera nella seconda parte si svolgeranno in lingua italiana.
A tutti gli studenti saranno comunque rivolte anche domande in lingua inglese su uno o più degli argomenti trattati a lezione durante la seconda parte del colloquio.

Titolo del corso: Narrazioni ecologiche postcoloniali
Argomento del corso:
Il corso si propone, inizialmente, di fornire conoscenze di base sulla teoria postcoloniale ed ecocritica e di introdurre diverse tradizioni letterarie di area anglofona in chiave ambientalista. In seguito, attraverso la lettura di testi esemplari, si esploreranno i tanti modi in cui la letteratura, ed in particolare quella postcoloniale di lingua inglese, rappresenta, illumina e media il rapporto tra l'umano e il più-che-umano, o, in termini più convenzionali, "natura" e "cultura". Saremo guidati dal consenso scientifico internazionale che avverte di una crisi ambientale planetaria e dalla fondamentale osservazione di Amitav Ghosh: "La crisi climatica è anche una crisi della cultura, e quindi dell'immaginazione". Le diverse opere letterarie in programma possono aiutarci a leggere il mondo in modo diverso e forse a trasformarlo, affrontando tutte le emozioni - ansia, paura, speranza - legate alla nostra condizione antropocenica.
Il corso rientra pienamente tra gli obiettivi del progetto di eccellenza CECIL.

Anglophone Eco-Narratives
The course opens with an introduction to postcolonial literatures in English and to the most relevant approaches, critical tools and key concepts from the field of postcolonial studies. Then, through the reading of some exemplary texts, it will explore the many ways in which literature, and particularly English-postcolonial literature, represents, illuminates and mediates the relationship between the human and the more-than-human, or, in more conventional terms, "nature" and "culture." We will be guided by the international scientific consensus warning of a planetary environmental crisis and Amitav Ghosh's fundamental observation, "The climate crisis is also a crisis of culture, and therefore of imagination." The various literary works on the program can help us to read the world differently and perhaps transform it by addressing all the emotions-anxiety, fear, hope-that are linked to our Anthropocene condition.
The course is fully in line with the objectives of the excellence CECIL

Modalità della verifica a fine corso:
L'esame, solo orale, sarà diviso in due parti.
1) Teoria e lineamenti di storia letteraria postcoloniale. Solo chi supera questa parte con un punteggio di almeno 18/30 può accedere alla seconda. Il punteggio ottenuto nella prima parte farà media con quello dell'orale per il raggiungimento del voto finale.
2) Discussione, analisi e approfondimento critico di alcuni (due o più) dei testi in programma d’esame.
Il colloquio orale vuole valutare le capacità critiche e le conoscenze teoriche acquisite dallo studente. Particolarmente apprezzate saranno le capacità dello studente di contestualizzare autori e opere, sia nel tempo sia nello spazio e di comprendere le motivazioni politiche e sociali sottese a opere e fenomeni letterari.
Il raggiungimento da parte dello studente di una visione organica dei temi affrontati a lezione congiunta alla loro utilizzazione critica, il possesso di una padronanza espressiva e di una capacità di elaborazione personale delle tematiche trattate, e l'approfondimento di particolari argomenti, anche oltre le indicazioni fornite e lezione e nel programma d'esame saranno valutati con voti di eccellenza. La conoscenza per lo più meccanica e/o mnemonica della materia, capacità di sintesi e di analisi non articolate e/o un linguaggio corretto ma non sempre appropriato porteranno a valutazioni discrete; lacune formative e/o linguaggio inappropriato, – seppur in un contesto di conoscenze minimali del materiale d'esame - , incapacità di formulare opinioni personali e di andare oltre la mera descrizione riassuntiva delle trame nella trattazione delle opere letterarie condurranno a voti che non supereranno la sufficienza. Lacune formative, linguaggio inappropriato, incapacità di contestualizzazione, mancanza di orientamento all'interno della teoria postcoloniale e dei materiali bibliografici analizzati non potranno che essere valutati negativamente. Sarà inoltre valutata positivamente la partecipazione attiva alle lezioni e la lettura di almeno un romanzo (da discutersi in classe) durante lo svolgimento delle stesse. Gli studenti sono pertanto caldamente raccomandati di leggere almeno un romanzo entro il primo mese di corso, in modo da poterne discutere in classe.
Si ricorda che questo è un esame di letteratura, non di lingua inglese. Per valutare al meglio le competenze acquisite dagli studenti italiani e il loro spirito critico, secondo le modalità sopra esposte, la prima parte dell'esame e la discussione di almeno un'opera nella seconda parte si svolgeranno in lingua italiana. A tutti gli studenti saranno comunque rivolte anche domande in lingua inglese su uno o più degli argomenti trattati a lezione durante la seconda parte del colloquio.

The oral exam will be divided into two parts. 1) Theory and features of postcolonial literary history. Only those who pass this part with a score of at least 18/30 can access the second. The score obtained in the first part will average with the score for the final vote. 2) Discussion, analysis and critical analysis of some (two or more) of the chosen texts. The oral interview wants to evaluate the critical skills and theoretical knowledge acquired by the student. The student's ability to contextualize authors and works, both in time and in space, and to understand the political and social motivations underlying literary works and phenomena will be particularly appreciated. The achievement by the student of an organic vision of the topics dealt with in a joint lesson with their critical use, possession of an expressive mastery and of a personal processing capacity of the topics dealt with, and the deepening of particular topics, even beyond the indications provided and lesson and in the exam program will be evaluated with marks of excellence. The mostly mechanical and / or mnemonic knowledge of the subject, the ability to synthesize and analyze non-articulated and / or a correct but not always appropriate language will lead to discrete evaluations; training gaps and / or inappropriate language, - albeit in a context of minimal knowledge of the examination material -, inability to formulate personal opinions and to go beyond the mere summary description of the plots in the treatment of literary works will lead to votes that will not exceed the enough. Formative gaps, inappropriate language, inability to contextualize, lack of orientation within the postcolonial theory and the analyzed bibliographic materials can only be evaluated negatively. It will also positively evaluate the active participation in the lessons and the reading of at least one novel (to be discussed in class) during the course of the same. Students are therefore strongly recommended to read at least one novel within the first month of the course, so that they can discuss it in class. Please note that this is a literature exam, not an English language exam. In order to better evaluate the skills acquired by Italian students and their critical spirit, according to the methods outlined above, the first part of the exam and the discussion of at least one work in the second part will take place in Italian. All students will also be asked questions in English on one or more of the topics covered in class during the second part of the interview.
