Al termine del corso, lo studente avrà acquisito una conoscenza diretta e approfondita inerente a
- il contesto storico-culturale e letterario vittoriano, con focalizzazioni su un circuito editoriale riguardante la scrittura femminile e la sua ricezione in un ambito che dal settore scientifico-divulgativo della manualistica del verde (il “gardening advice book”) si estende alla riflessione intima, diaristica e autobiografica fino ad includere una componente di creatività letteraria
- il tema del giardino, analizzato sia come variegato topos trans-storico (connotazioni metaforiche, allegoriche, bibliche, archetipiche, psico-terapeutiche), sia come realtà localizzata e micro-territorio che è la risultante di un percorso agenziale e plasmante di progettazione, selezione, coltivazione e cura
- questioni inerenti sia ai presupposti sociologico-identitari e culturali, sia ai principi estetici e funzionalistici che informarono l’architettura del paesaggio, le tipologie di garden design e la “botanomania” nell’Inghilterra dell’Ottocento, con i suoi rappresentanti più illustri
- le trasposizioni e semantizzazioni dell’elemento naturalistico e dell’esemplare botanico e, in generale, delle realtà di giardini, parchi, aree coltivate e spazi verdi nel corpus della letteratura vittoriana, con riflessioni critiche su alcune opere canoniche
By the end of the course, students are expected to achieve a high level of knowledge regarding
- the historical, cultural and literary context of the Victorian Age, along with a publishing industry connected with female writing and its reception in a scenario involving popular science and manuals of gardening (the “gardening advice book”) as well as intimate reflections and diary-like, autobiographical writings filtered through the literary imagination
- the theme of the garden, seen as both a rich trans-historical topos (with metaphorical, allegorical, biblical, archetypal, psychotherapeutic connotations) and a specific place being moulded through an active process of planning, selection, growing, and care
- issues regarding status and identity, sociological and cultural assumptions and the aesthetic and functional principles informing nineteenth-century Britain’s landscape architecture, garden design and “botanomania”, with references to its most authoritative representatives
- the transpositions and semanticisation of plants and flowers and, in general, gardens, parks, cultivated lands, and green areas in Victorian literature, with a critical commentary on a selection of canonical works
- Per l'accertamento delle conoscenze si prevedono prove scritte in itinere (written reports, in italiano o in inglese) e momenti seminariali incentrati sulle autrici e i testi inseriti in programma (approfondimenti, messe a fuoco analitiche, valutazioni sulla bibliografia critica)
- Coronamento di questi riscontri sarà l'esame finale, nella forma di un colloquio che riguarderà contestualmente le due parti del programma
- Il colloquio si svolgerà di norma in italiano, con alcune domande in lingua inglese. Lo studente potrà altresì scegliere di svolgere l’esame interamente in inglese
- During classes, students are encouraged to actively participate in the learning process and engage with the course material through short discussions. They are also required to present written reports and case-based research which will demonstrate their level of factual knowledge and comprehension. Such reports will concern the authors or the primary as well as secondary texts included in the syllabus
- This kind of participation will be taken into account in view of the final oral exam, which will focus on both Module A and Module B
- Foreign students may choose to take the exam in English or in Italian
Durante il corso, lo studente maturerà la capacità di
- contestualizzare, argomentare con competenza e approfondire in autonomia aspetti inerenti agli ambiti tematici e alle opere analizzate a lezione
- individuare chiavi di lettura, marche stilistiche, paradigmi e varianti testuali, applicando metodologie critiche adeguate
- inquadrare autori, opere e contesti con padronanza di registro
During course activities, students will acquire skills allowing them to
- properly discuss and investigate in detail aspects of the production analysed throughout the course
- single out crucial tenets, stylistic traits, textual paradigms and variants by means of suitable critical tools and methodologies
- draw on a pertinent register when examining authors, works and contexts
Oltre che in sede di esame finale, la verifica delle capacità acquisite o maturate avrà luogo attraverso prove intermedie. In conformità con il progetto di eccellenza del Dipartimento FiLeLi e gli obiettivi di CECIL (Centro d’Eccellenza per il Contrasto all’Impoverimento Linguistico), queste prove saranno rivolte agli studenti frequentanti e consisteranno in relazioni scritte, in italiano o in inglese, su autrici e testi inseriti in programma, o a più ampio raggio, con specifici riferimenti metodologici al taglio della ricerca condotta e all’impianto delle letture critiche utilizzate. Le relazioni saranno visionate dalla docente e discusse in classe

Durante il corso, lo studente
- svilupperà una sensibilità critica nei confronti dei generi testuali così come delle istanze e dei processi comunicativi che connotano il discorso letterario
- rivolgerà un'attenzione particolare all’orizzonte extratestuale, alle dinamiche socio-culturali e ai codici assiologici e figurali dell’epoca vittoriana
- si confronterà con modalità e strategie di contaminazione interdisciplinare tra scrittura letteraria, testimonianza autobiografica e divulgazione tecnico-scientifica in tema di botanica e gardening
During course activities, students are expected to
- develop a critical awareness of textual genres as well as the perspectives and communicative processes of literary discourse
- pay attention to the extra-textual dimension, socio-cultural dynamics, axiological and figural codes of the Victorian period
- consciously deal with the modes and strategies of interdisciplinary contamination between literary writing, autobiographical testimony and the dissemination of notions concerning botany and gardening
Oltre che in sede di esame finale, durante i momenti di esposizione e interazione seminariale si terrà conto del grado di maturazione dello studente, ovvero del suo interesse, del coinvolgimento attivo e dell'impegno volti a inquadrare le autrici e i testi di riferimento in modo lucido e criticamente consapevole. In conformità con il progetto di eccellenza del Dipartimento FiLeLi e gli obiettivi di CECIL, particolare attenzione sarà rivolta al percorso di rafforzamento e consolidamento della padronanza linguistica e argomentativa
- During classes, students will be able to show their involvement, growth in cognitive understanding and critical sensibility through active participation in discussions as well as written and case-based research on the authors and texts included in the syllabus. In line with the Excellence Project of the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics and the goals of CECIL, a particular emphasis will be placed on the strengthening and upholding of linguistic and argumentative competence
- The conclusive assessment will take place through a final oral exam
- Foreign students may choose to take this exam in English or in Italian
Lo studente dovrebbe possedere una buona padronanza della lingua inglese e un’adeguata conoscenza dei fondamenti della storia letteraria britannica, soprattutto dell'Ottocento
This course requires a good command of the English and Italian languages. An adequate knowledge of the history of English literature and its contexts (especially concerning the nineteenth century) is also recommended

- Although this course is mainly structured on a taught-class basis, forms of active participation by students are also welcomed. These will consist in seminar-like discussions along with written reports and case-based research on relevant texts, authors and topics. Il programma di questo insegnamento da 9 CFU (54 ore) si articola in due diverse parti:

MODULO A
“Progettare, coltivare, scrivere: l’agenzialità della gardening woman in epoca vittoriana”
Descrizione: Il corso intende condurre un’analisi approfondita di un fenomeno estetico-culturale ed editoriale che in epoca vittoriana acquisì un rilievo significativo. Sull’onda dell’interesse crescente per gli studi botanici e orticolturali da un lato e la progettazione di giardini e spazi verdi dall’altro, emerse una sorta di macro-laboratorio di scrittura che, partendo dal “gardening advice book”, si sviluppò lungo traiettorie sfaccettate in cui confluirono componenti di carattere autobiografico, diaristico-intimista e letterario. Protagoniste di questo fenomeno furono varie “donne giardiniere” che, a livello amatoriale ma anche con competenze di professioniste e ruoli di responsabilità gestionale, aggiunsero tasselli all’enciclopedia del sapere paesaggistico-ambientale, soprattutto in tema di realizzazione e manutenzione dei giardini privati. Al tempo stesso, si osserverà come i loro scritti si connotino di finalità comunicative che guardano oltre l’ambito del gusto e della divulgazione tecnico-scientifica in direzione di un’esplorazione sociale, psicologica e identitaria che si muove nel terreno delle interrelazioni solidali di un’ampia comunità femminile. MODULO B
Letture complementari e di approfondimento
Descrizione: Questa seconda parte del programma, che lo studente dovrà preparare in modo autonomo ma che potrà anche essere oggetto di analisi delle prove intermedie (relazioni scritte), consiste in una selezione di studi critici grazie ai quali sarà possibile: a/ inquadrare ulteriormente la figura storica del/la “Victorian gardener”; b/ mettere a fuoco un complesso di trasposizioni e valenze metaforiche riguardanti giardini, parchi, patrimoni botanici e piantagioni nel corpus della letteratura britannica dell’Ottocento. This course of English Literature B (54 hours) is structured into two units, which are both mandatory:
- Module A: “Planning, cultivating, writing: the gardening woman’s agency in the Victorian Age ”
- Module B: Further reading material
MODULE A
“Planning, cultivating, writing: the gardening woman’s agency in the Victorian Age ”
Description: This course aims to analyse an aesthetic and cultural phenomenon which, together with a thriving publishing industry, reached a pinnacle in the Victorian Age. In nineteenth-century Britain, a considerable surge of interest in botany, horticulture and the planning of gardens and green areas was accompanied by writing practices which, first revolving around the gardening advice book, were to develop in multifaceted ways so as to include autobiographical, diary-like, and literary elements. Quite a few “women gardeners” were the primary actors in this scenario. Whether amateurs or professionals, they contributed to expanding the encyclopaedia of landscape and environmental knowledge, especially as far as the creation and maintenance of private gardens were concerned. At the same time, one can see how their production was not confined to questions of taste and popular science. They actually undertook a social, psychological and identity-searching survey that looked at a network of supportive interrelations within a wide female community. - Oltre alle prove intermedie, di cui si terrà conto per la valutazione, lo studente dovrà sostenere un esame finale in forma di un colloquio volto ad accertare le conoscenze, le capacità e i comportamenti acquisiti nell'ambito sia del Modulo A, sia del Modulo B
- Il colloquio, da tenersi nel corso dei regolari appelli d’esame, durerà mediamente 30/45 minuti e non potrà ritenersi superato in caso di palesi lacune su parti del programma, di una scarsa capacità riflessiva e argomentativa e di evidenti carenze linguistiche
- Il colloquio si svolgerà prevalentemente in italiano, con alcune domande in lingua inglese. Lo studente potrà altresì scegliere di svolgere l’esame interamente in inglese
- Students will be assessed through a final oral examination during one of the scheduled sessions throughout the exam period. Questions in Italian will be followed by a few ones in English, although students may also choose to take the whole exam in English
- Attending students are also required to take active part during lectures and present written reports and case-based research, which will be positively taken into account in view of the final exam
- The final exam will cover both Module A and B material and will test the students’ level of knowledge, acquired skills and behaviours as illustrated in the previous sections of the syllabus. It will be 30/45 minutes long
