Il corso mira a far luce sull'evoluzione della lingua inglese dalle origini a oggi, attraverso un approccio linguistico diacronico e comparativo fondato sull’analisi di testi prodotti nei secoli e dei relativi contesti culturali che ne furono alla base.
The course aims to investigate the evolution of the English language from its origins to the present, by means of a diachronic and comparative linguistic approach based on the analysis of texts produced over the centuries and their underlying cultural contexts.
Al termine del corso studentesse e studenti saranno in grado di:
– padroneggiare le linee essenziali dello sviluppo della lingua inglese dagli inizi a oggi;
– riconoscere l'evoluzione fonetica delle lingue germaniche (soprattutto inglese e tedesco) a partire dalle origini indoeuropee;
– ricostruire la storia dei principali fenomeni ortografici, fonologici, morfosintattici e lessicali;
– contestualizzare i vari testi letterari nei relativi ambiti di produzione e di ricezione;
– individuare le principali caratteristiche stilistiche e ideologiche di tali testi;
– migliorare la propria competenza linguistica con una accresciuta consapevolezza sulla natura e l’uso della lingua inglese.
After completing the course students will be able to:
– master the outlines of the development of the English language from its origins to the present day;
– trace the history of the main orthographical, phonological, morphosyntactic and lexical phenomena; and
– contextualise the various literary texts in the relevant areas of production and reception;
– identify the main stylistic and ideological features of these texts;
– improve their linguistic competence with an increased awareness of the nature and use of the English language
Attraverso la discussione critica aperta e il confronto davanti ai propri pari, studentesse / studenti avranno potuto impadronirsi di strumenti critici di livello avanzato, con una autonomia di giudizio tale da consentire l’analisi e la valutazione di testi e forme risalenti a epoche storiche anche molto diverse alla base della lingua inglese.
Through open critical discussion and debate in front of their peers, students will have mastered high-level critical tools that will enable them to analyse and evaluate older documents and linguistic stages, with full knowledge of the topic and autonomy of judgement.
È indispensabile la conoscenza a grandi linee della storia dell’Inghilterra dal Medioevo a oggi, da un qualsiasi manuale accademico.
È inoltre fondamentale aver sostenuto un esame di Filologia germanica
A general overview of the history of England from the Middle Ages to the present from any academic textbook is essential.
It is also essential to have taken an examination in Germanic Philology.

La verifica delle competenze acquisite consta di una prova scritta con domande a scelta multipla e, in caso di esito positivo, un breve colloquio orale che mira a valutare gli elementi fondamentali della storia linguistica dell’inglese e il contesto culturale e letterario che ne fece da sfondo.
Saranno valutati in particolare il possesso di un quadro organico degli elementi fondamentali, unitamente alla padronanza espressiva. La conoscenza mnemonica e superficiale degli argomenti, unita a un linguaggio inappropriato o confuso, non permettono di raggiungere una votazione finale brillante.
18-21 conoscenza prevalentemente o esclusivamente descrittiva, espressa in un linguaggio modesto e/o inadeguato; scarsa chiarezza e limitata organizzazione del pensiero; approfondimento ridotto o nullo
22-25 discreta conoscenza della materia e dei problemi, che riflettono applicazione ma che sono riferiti talora in un linguaggio non sempre appropriato e di tono colloquiale/ familiare; tracce di una rielaborazione autonoma delle questioni studiate, con una certa abilità analitica
26-29 buona conoscenza delle problematiche connesse con la materia; l'espressione è coerente e appropriata, con un livello di riflessione decisamente elevato, con capacità esemplificative e critiche
30-30L ottima conoscenza e sicurezza di espressione, con una rielaborazione autonoma e disinvolta dei vari argomenti e senza alcuna difficoltà nel passaggio da questioni generali a particolari; il linguaggio espressivo è accurato e di livello superiore

The final exam consists both of a written test of multiple-choice questions and, if the test is passed, a following oral examination that aims to assess the fundamental elements of the linguistic history of English and the cultural and literary context that formed its background.. During the oral exam, the student must be able to demonstrate her/his knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with the property of the expression.
Importance will be paid to the possession of an organic framework of the basic elements, together with expressive mastery. The mnemonic and superficial knowledge of the arguments, together with inappropriate or confusing language, does not allow to reach a brilliant final mark.
18-21 predominantly or exclusively descriptive knowledge, expressed in a modest and / or inadequate language, lack of clarity and limited organization of thought.
22-25 fair knowledge of the subject and of the problems, which reflect application but which are sometimes referred to in a language that is not always appropriate and of a colloquial / familiar tone; traces of an autonomous re-elaboration of the studied issues, with a certain analytical ability.
26-29 (very) good knowledge of issues related to the subject; the expression is coherent and appropriate, with a high level of reflection, and with exemplary and critical capacities.
30-30L excellent knowledge and security of expression, with an autonomous reworking of the various topics and without any difficulty in the transition from general to specific issues; the expressive language is accurate and of a high standard.
