Ability to read the text in the syllabus critically and to develop autonomous reflections
Il corso alternerà lezioni frontali a forme seminariali. Perciò, la verifica delle conoscenze non avverrà soltanto in occasione dell’esame orale finale, bensì anche durante il corso con l’invito costante a partecipare alla discussione con domande e opinioni e con la modalità sperimentale degli interventi programmati e guidati. Inoltre, per alleggerire il carico di studio per l’esame finale lo studente frequentante potrà preparare un saggio originale o la simulazione di un progetto di ricerca (le differenze tra queste due tipologie di testo verranno illustrate dal docente durante il corso).
The course will alternate between lectures and seminars. Therefore, knowledge will be tested not only in the final oral examination but also during the course with the constant invitation to participate in the discussion with questions and opinions, and with the experimental mode of planned and guided interventions. Furthermore, in order to lighten the study load in view of the final examination, the attending student may prepare an original essay or the simulation of a research project (the differences between these two types of text will be explained by the lecturer during the course).

La conoscenza pregressa della Fenomenologia dello spirito di Hegel o di altri dei testi o degli autori e delle autrici citate in bibliografia sicuramente potrà aiutare chi la possiede, ma in generale non è un prerequisito necessario. Si richiede però frequenza assidua e disponibilità a mettersi alla prova partecipando attivamente alla discussione.
Previous knowledge of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit or other of the texts cited in the bibliography will certainly help those who have it, but in general it is not a necessary prerequisite. However, assiduous attendance and a willingness to test oneself by actively participating in the discussion are required.
Il corso alternerà due modalità di lezione:
- Il docente affronterà la lettura di Soggetti di desiderio di Judith Butler e del capitolo sull’autocoscienza (sino alla dialettica servo-padrone) della Fenomenologia dello spirito di Hegel tramite lezioni frontali;
- Tutti gli altri testi saranno discussi in classe tramite interventi guidati: in altre parole, dopo aver letto almeno 2 per ciascun* dei testi di approfondimento (cfr. punto B di seguito) gli studenti e le studentesse che lo vorranno prenoteranno sulla piattaforma moodle la possibilità di tenere degli interventi in un giorno fissato dal docente; in quel giorno il docente e/o suoi/sue collaboratori/collaboratrici guideranno gli interventi moderando l’incontro. L’intervento in classe permetterà alla studentessa o allo studente di non portare all’esame il testo o gruppi di testi.
The course will alternate between two lecture modes:
- The lecturer will address the reading of Judith Butler's Subjects of Desire and the chapter on self-consciousness (up to the servant-master dialectic) of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit through lectures;
- All the other texts will be discussed in class by means of guided interventions.
I corpi come soggetti di desiderio: Judith Butler e la ricezione di Hegel in Francia
Obiettivo del corso è studiare la ricezione dei temi hegeliani dell’autocoscienza, del desiderio e del riconoscimento in Francia nel Novecento seguendo l’interpretazione fornita da Judith Butler. Ci interrogheremo sul rapporto che intercorre tra autocoscienza come relazione a sé e riconoscimento come relazione ad altri, sul ruolo che assolvono empatia e immaginazione nel definire il rapporto di subordinazione fra le due forme di relazione e formazione del sé, porremo al centro dell’analisi la dialettica che si instaura secondo Butler fra il desiderio come categoria esistenziale che sembra «operare per un ideale di disincarnazione» e il desiderio intesto come «coscienza che si fa corpo», espressione del sé che si stabilizza «nel mezzo della vita».
Bodies as Subjects of Desire: Judith Butler and the Reception of Hegel in France
The aim of this course is to study the reception of the Hegelian themes of self-consciousness, desire and recognition in France in the 20th century following the interpretation provided by Judith Butler. We will examine the relationship between self-consciousness, as a relation to self, and recognition, as a relation to others, the role of empathy and imagination in defining the relationship of subordination between the two forms of the self’s relation, and we will focus on the dialectic that Butler establishes between desire as an existential category that seems to "operate for an ideal of disembodiment" and desire as "consciousness that becomes body", an expression of the self that stabilises "in the midst of life".

For contractual reasons of the lecturer, the course will be held entirely between September 18 and October 31, with two lessons per week of three hours each.
