Al termine del corso lo studente avrà acquisito le conoscenze fondamentali relative alla storia della letteratura inglese dal Settecento alla contemporaneità. Sarà in grado di delineare e confrontare i paradigmi culturali e le problematiche testuali con riferimento agli autori, le opere e i movimenti più significativi dall'Età Augustea a oggi, con particolare attenzione alla narrativa otto-novecentesca (Conrad, Stevenson, Kipling) incentrata sulle vicende dell'impero britannico.
The student who completes this course will have a general knowledge of English Literature from the Eighteenth century to the present day. He/she will be able to outline and compare the main cultural paradigms and textual issues of the period under scrutiny with particular reference to the narrative of the British empire produced between the 19th and the 20th century. Conrad, Stevenson and Kipling will be cases in point.
L’esame finale consiste in un colloquio in italiano, o, a scelta dello studente, in inglese. Il corso non prevede prove in itinere. Durante l'esame, allo studente verrà sottoposto un breve test scritto, con domande closed-ended e a risposta multipla concernenti la storia della letteratura. Un esempio di test sarà consultabile sul sito E learning del corso. Il mancato superamento del test pregiudica il superamento della parte dell'esame relativa alla storia della letteratura.
The final oral exam will assess the student's argumentative skills and ability in discussing the critical issues analysed during the course. The exam will be either in Italian or in English according to the student's choice. No in-course or intermediate assessment will be carried out.
During the exam, a written test will be submitted to the students, with closed-ended and multiple-choice questions about the history of English literature. A test sample will be available on the course website (E Learning area umanistica). Students who fail this test must repeat the part of the exam concerning the history of literature.
Al termine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di inquadrare gli autori, le opere e movimenti più significativi entro la storia della letteratura inglese dal Settecento alla contemporaneità, istituendo confronti e motivando culturalmente le transizioni storico-letterarie. Sarà inoltre in grado di interpretare e contestualizzare le problematiche specifiche che attengono alla narrativa proto-modernista di Joseph Conrad, la narrativa dell’impero tra Otto e Novecento, il Modernismo, l’imperial romance.
The student who completes this course will be able to analyse, compare and discuss the most significant works, authors and movements from 18th-century to present-day English literature. He/she will be able to interpret and contextualize the critical issues that emerge from Joseph Conrad's protomodernist fiction, British narratives of the empire between the 19th and 20th century, the Modernist movement and the tradition of the imperial romance.
Colloquio finale in italiano, o, su richiesta dello studente, in inglese.
An oral examination, either in Italian or in English according to the student's choice, will be the final assessment tool.
Lo studente affinerà capacità di interpretazione, contestualizzazione e storicizzazione dei testi intesi in quanto oggetti estetici, costrutti semiotici e prodotti culturali.
The student will demonstrate his/her argumentative and critical skills by interpreting, contextualizing and historicizing literary texts as aesthetic objects, semiotic artifacts and cultural products.

Conoscenza di base della lingua inglese, sufficiente a confrontarsi con la lettura di testi primari e secondari in lingua originale.
An elementary knowledge of English is required in order to approach the study of fiction, poetry and critical essays written in this language.
Le lezioni, di tipo frontale, saranno tenute in italiano, o, eccezionalmente, in inglese con ampie integrazioni in italiano.
Lo studente acquisirà autonomamente gli elementi di storia della letteratura forniti dal manuale e le conoscenze di base relative alla storia della letteratura inglese e alla lettura, traduzione, interpretazione e contestualizzazione delle opere indicate nella bibliografia al punto 2.PARTE ISTITUZIONALE E LETTURE. I più rilevanti snodi storico-culturali della letteratura inglese saranno tuttavia oggetto di alcune lezioni propedeutiche.
The course is structured on a taught-class basis. Although classes are generally given in Italian, a few of them will be given in English.
The student will deal with Module 2 of the course on an individual study basis. Through this activity she/he will learn about the most significant authors, works and issues that have shaped English literature from the 18th century to the present day. She/he will also train her/his skills in reading, paraphrasing, interpreting and contextualizing the works listed under the heading MODULE 2. HISTORY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE. LITERARY TEXTS. However, some paradigmatic texts and the most significant turning points in the history of English literature will be discussed by the teacher in a few lectures.
Il programma consta di due parti:
1. CORSO MONOGRAFICO: “Joseph Conrad fra protomodernismo e imperial romance"
Il corso monografico si interessa allo sviluppo della narrativa di Conrad, messa a confronto con le esperienze di Stevenson e Kipling, dalla prima maturità al tardo stile, con particolare interesse per i testi in cui l'autore definisce la propria poetica protomodernista e si confronta con la realtà politico-culturale dell'imperialismo.
2. PARTE ISTITUZIONALE E LETTURE
The course consists of two parts:
MODULE 1.: "Joseph Conrad between Protomodernism and Imperial Romance"
This section of the course focuses on Joseph Conrad's fiction from his early maturity to his late style. Specific attention will be given to Conrad's protomodernist style and poetics. His attitude to British and European imperialism will also be taken into account and compared to R.L. Stevenson's and R. Kipling's axiology, poetics and works.

Colloquio finale in italiano teso ad accertare la conoscenza dei lineamenti di storia della letteratura inglese dal Settecento alla contemporaneità, nonché la capacità di leggere, tradurre interpretare e contestualizzare in chiave letterario-culturale le opere in programma, facendo adeguato riferimento ai testi critici, storici e metodologici proposti come sussidio.
Il colloquio sarà preceduto da un breve test scritto concernente la storia della letteratura inglese dal settecento alla contemporaneità. Ottenere un risultato positivo nel test è indispensabile per il superamento della parte di esame relativa alla storia della letteratura. Per un esempio di test e per ulteriori chiarimenti sulle modalità di esame, si consulti la pagina web del corso (vedi sotto).
The final oral exam will assess the student's ability in discussing the critical issues analysed during the course with reference to the history of English literature from the Eighteenth century to the present day. Her/his interpreting skills and his/her understanding of cultural contexts and literary texts will also be assessed. The exam will be either in Italian or in English according to the student's choice.
Il corso avrà inizio lunedì 18 febbraio 2019.
Le lezioni si svolgeranno nel secondo semestre dell’anno accademico 2018/19 con il seguente orario: LUN. dalle 12 alle 13.30 (aula Boilleau 1); MER. dalle 14.15 alle 15.45 (Aula Magna Palazzo Matteucci); GIO dalle 14.15 alle 15.45 (aula 3-4 Polo carmignani).
Durante il secondo semestre i ricevimenti del docente avranno luogo presso Palazzo Scala, Via S. Maria 67, il giovedì dalle 12 alle 13.30.
