Conoscenze

Knowledge

The course aims at enabling students to read an Italian literary text (in verse or prose) with full awareness of its formal features (from the point of view of literary technique structure and style) and to contextualize it in the literary panorama.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Students will eventually be asked to sit an optional brief test which should highlight possible orthographical, syntactical and grammatical uncertainties, and to evaluate their ability to paraphrase a literary text.

Skills

Comprehension: students will be required to get acquainted with the principal critical methods of analysis, and to fully understand the critical material about the topics of the course.

Application: students should apply the analytical knowledge acquired, showing their ability to grasp the structural aspects of the text and its relationship with the historical and cultural background.

Autonomous assessment: At the end of the course students should be able to understand and critically discuss the features of a proposed text and its analysis.

Assessment criteria of skills

Suggested readings in class will enable students to refine their comprehension and analysis skills of texts object of the module, and of the historical and literary background. The course will feature some paraphrase and analysis exercitations of the Divine Comedy. Special attention will be devoted to the acquiring of a specific critical lexicon, soliciting interventions in class.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Students should critically interpret a literary text referring in a conscious and autonomous manner to the critical bibliography. They will learn to carry on simple bibliographic research, both paper-based both computer-based. They should be able to individuate the more reliable editions in which to read the proposed texts.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Students will be asked to justify their choices of both primary and secondary texts. They should demonstrate to have some acquaintance with the most reliable websites for bibliographical research.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

Students should have enough language skills to allow him to follow the lecturer’s lesson; they should have an overall awareness of the history of European literary movements and they should be able to contextualize them chronologically. They should also be able to write according to current Italian orthography and syntax.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The course will be carried out in the form of frontal lessons, with the help of slides and/or photocopies. The slides will be made available on the MOODLE platform during the course and should also be used by non-attending students.

The teacher is available during office hours to support students and help them deal with any difficulties of interpretation that may arise from texts in ancient Italian.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The course is organized into two modules, core content (A: I Semester) and monographic (B: II Semester).

In Module A, students are offered a very short cycle of introductory lessons of a theoretical and methodological nature, followed by an in-depth study of some 'classic' texts to be read in a largely anthological (or integral, in the case of La Mandragola) form. The selected works will be contextualized from a historical point of view (broadening the discourse to related currents and authors) and also addressed directly through the reading and commentary, in the classroom, of some particularly significant text portions.

In its monographic part (Module B) the course aims this year to trace a path in the national literary history following the developments of the novelistic genre in some fundamental stages, from Boccaccio to Verga.

Non-attending students info

As indicated above, the programme and examination mode are the same for both attending and not attending students.

Students who have not attended the course are required, however, to supplement their preparation by reading A. Manganaro, Forme e storia del “genere” novella, in «Le forme e la storia», VI (2013), 2, pp. 7-18.

Assessment methods

For all students, both attending and non-attending (except for Erasmus students or non-native speakers, for whom see below), the examination still consists (given the circumstances imposed by the pandemic) of an oral interview in two parts.

  1. The first part (relating to module A of the course) will include questions on literary history topics (part I: up to the authors of the early 16th century), canti from La Divina Commedia, Petrarchic texts indicated in the bibliography and La Mandragola.
  2. The second part (relating to module B of the course) will include questions on literary history topics (part II: from Tasso's work to the early 20th century), on the texts presented in class in the second semester and on the related critical essays. A few days before taking this second part of the exam, each student will have to write and send to the teacher via e-mail a "reading form" relating to one of the critical essays indicated in the bibliography. Instructions on how to write the form will be given during the lesson.

WARNING: The two parts of the examination can be taken in the same or in different appeals (in the same session or even in separate sessions). However, in order to take the second part it is essential to have passed the first part.

Erasmus students or students who are not native speakers of Italian and have not attended High Schools in Italy will be allowed to take the exam (for 6 or 12 ECTS, depending on whether the attendance is semi-annual or annual) in a reserved way. They will be able to concentrate their preparation on 14 (for 6 ECTS) or 25 (for 12 ECTS) subjects listed in a list that will be published before the end of the course. At the time of the exam (which will be held orally), they will then have to answer 4 (for 6 ECTS) or 6 (for 12 ECTS) questions chosen by the teacher from the list(s).
