Lo studente dovrà acquisire conoscenze in merito agli strumenti e alle metodologie di analisi del testo letterario unitamente a conoscenze di ordine storico-letterario e, più latamente, di ordine culturale relativamente al contesto francese dell’Ottocento.
The student will acquire knowledge about the tools and methods for the analysis of literary texts; s/he will also gain historical and literary knowledge as well as a detailed description of the cultural background in relation to the nineteenth-century French context.
La verifica delle conoscenze avverrà attraverso un esame orale finale. L'esame potrà essere preceduto da una prova scritta i cui contenuti e il cui esito verranno discussi al momento dell'esame orale.
The verification of knowledge will take place through a final oral exam. The exam can be preceded by a written test.
Al termine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di analizzare un testo narrativo del periodo studiato collocandolo nel proprio contesto storico e ideologico, di descriverne e valutarne gli elementi della struttura formale, di estrapolare correttamente dal testo elementi tematici senza stravolgerne il senso.
At the end of the course the student will be able to analyze a literary text placing it in its historical and ideological context, to describe and evaluate the elements of the formal structure, to extract thematic elements from the text appropriately without distorting their meaning.
Lo studente dovrà dimostrare di sapere descrivere un testo narrativo del periodo studiato nei suoi aspetti formali, di interpretarne gli elementi semantici e di collocare il testo stesso nella continuità della tradizione storico-letteraria e retorica.
The student will have to demonstrate to know how to describe a literary text in relation to the period studied in its formal aspects, to interpret its semantic elements and to place the text itself in the continuity of its historical, literary and rhetorical tradition.
Saranno acquisite opportune capacità di accuratezza e precisione nello svolgere attività di confronto e analisi del testo letterario.
The student will acquire appropriate skills of accuracy and precision in carrying out activities of comparison and analysis of the literary text in poetic detail.
Sarà richiesto agli studenti di intervenire nel corso delle lezioni per rendere conto di esercizi di interpretazione testuale proposti via via.
Students will be asked to intervene during the lessons during interpretation exercises.
Lo studente dovrà possibilmente possedere conoscenze minimali nel campo della letteratura francese moderna, nonché una competenza linguistica sufficiente per la lettura delle opere che sarà effettuata tramite edizioni con testo originale e traduzione italiana a fronte.
The student should possibly possess some minimal knowledge in the field of modern French literature as well as a linguistic competence which is sufficient for the reading of the works that will be carried out through editions with original text accompanied by Italian translations.
Il corso verrà svolto mediante lezioni frontali (con ausilio di lucidi/slide/ecc.) e agli studenti verrà richiesto di interagire con il docente ad ogni momento attraverso interventi e domande
Gli studenti potranno incontrare regolarmente il docente durante l'orario di ricevimento.
Le lezioni verranno svolte in lingua italiana e i testi in francese verranno tradotti dal docente.
The course will be carried out through lectures (with the help of slides, etc.) and students will be asked to interact with the professor at each moment through interventions and questions. Students will be able to meet regularly with the professor during receiving hours. Lessons will be held in Italian and the texts in French will be translated by the professor.
Baudelaire, Flaubert e gli inizi del modernismo
Attraverso un'analisi dell'opera letteraria e delle posizioni critiche di Baudelaire e di Flaubert il corso si propone di studiare gli aspetti salienti della trasformazione estetica che, in contesto francese, caratterizza il discorso letterario e in generale la visione artistica della realtà nelle sue varie espressioni a partire da metà Ottocento. Più precisamente si tratterà di indagare le forme e i modi del graduale passaggio dalla rappresentazione letteraria cosiddetta « realistica » di matrice tardo-settecentesca e romantica alla rappresentazione « protomodernista » e naturalista che s'impone nella seconda metà del secolo, rappresentazione nella quale si annunciano i caratteri della rivoluzione formale propriamente modernista del primo Novecento. Nel corso delle lezioni si cercherà, in concreto, di descrivere e di valutare i procedimenti poetici e narrativi che registrano in modo determinante i cambiamenti sociali e culturali intervenuti successivamente alla data simbolica del 1848, e che danno luogo a inedite espressioni della sensibilità del soggetto « moderno ». Su tale base si cercherà di sottoporre a vaglio critico la configurazione e la periodizzazione della storia letteraria del secondo Ottocento francese, con una concentrazione d’interesse sulla nozione teorica e storica di « modernismo » - più che mai oggetto, attualmente, d’un profondo ripensamento da parte degli storici della letteratura. A tal fine ci si concentrerà in particolare sugli elementi di straordinaria novità che compaiono nella raccolta di poemi in prosa Le Spleen de Paris di Baudelaire (oltre che su alcuni componimenti delle Fleurs du mal) e nei romanzi Madame Bovary e L'Éducation sentimentale di Flaubert: elementi che inducono a considerare il significato del termine «modernismo» in un’accezione di longue durée, più ampia di quella ancor oggi prevalentemente legata al contesto anglo-sassone e al primo Novecento. Il discorso rivolgerà particolare attenzione al parallelo che si istituisce fra tecniche narrative e descrittive della scrittura romanzesca da una parte e, dall’altra parte, tecniche e concezioni della pittura impressionista e post-impressionista.
Baudelaire, Flaubert and the beginnings of Modernism
Via a thorough analysis of the literary oeuvre and the critical pronouncements of both Baudelaire and Flaubert, the course aims at studying the main features of the French aesthetical transformation that characterized the literary discourse and the artistic vision at large starting from the middle of the 19th Century. More specifically it will put under scrutiny the forms and modes of the gradual passage from the so called “realistic” representation to the one commonly labelled as “protomodernist” and naturalist, which began to impose itself from the 1850s onwards. In such a representation, the crucial traits of the proper modernist formal revolution of the beginning of the 20th century are already adumbrated.From a practical point of view, the lessons will aim at describing and evaluating the narratological and poetical processes which reflected the social and cultural changes that happened after the symbolic date of 1848, which all contributed to novel expressions of the “modern” subject. On these premises the traditional periodization of French late 19th-century literature will be re-assessed, with a specific attention on the theoretical and historical notion of “Modernism”, nowadays more than ever undergoing a profound re-orientation by historians of literature. To this end particular attention will be devoted on the novelty elements appearing in the collection of prose poems Le Spleen de Paris by Baudelaire (in addition to some poems from Les Fleurs du Mal), and in the novels Madame Bovary and L’Éducation sentimentale by Flaubert. Such elements are likely to shed light on the notion of “Modernism” in a longue durée perspective, ampler than the one connected to the early 20th-century Anglo-Saxon context. Our discourse will pay special attention to the equation between narrative and descriptive techniques, on the one hand, and techniques and ideas relating to impressionist and post-impressionist painting on the other.

La frequenza è vivamente consigliata e l'impossibilità di frequentare le lezioni deve essere motivata. Per gli studenti non frequentanti il programma d'esame resta il medesimo con le seguenti variazioni del carico bibliografico:
-la lettura critica di romanzi a scelta ( sezione Testi, punto B ) dovrà esssere di 2 romanzi (anziché 1)
- la preparazione approfondita di studi dovrà essere di 5 lavori (anziché 3) fra quelli indicati nella bibbliografia.
Eventuali integrazioni e modificazioni del programma e della bibbiografia, modulate su casi particolari, potranno essere concordate con il docente.
Attendance is highly recommended and the inability to attend classes must be justified.For non-attending students, the exam program remains the same, but they will have to demonstrate that they have thoroughly prepared 2 (instead of 1) novels among those indicated in the Bibliography (primary sources, B), and 5 (instead of 3) studies (secondary sources). Any changes to the program and the bibliographical load can be agreed with the teacher during office hours.
L'esame avrà un momento finale orale consistente in domande puntuali e generali sui contenuti del corso e sui testi in bibliografia. Agli studenti, inoltre, potranno venire richiesti commenti sulle fonti primarie nonché su elementi di storia letteraria trattati a lezione. Nel caso in cui sia possibile tenere una prova scritta, essa consisterà in alcune domande di carattere generale sui contenuti del corso. Il superamento della prova scritta, i cui contenuti saranno materia di discussione durante il colloquio finale, esenta lo studente da una parte dell'esame orale.
The exam will have a final oral moment consisting of specific and general questions on the contents of the course and on the texts in the bibliography. Students may also be asked for comments on primary sources as well as on elements of literary history covered in class. In case it is possible to hold a written test, it will consist of some general questions about the course contents. Passing the written test, the contents of which will be discussed during the final interview, exempts the student from part of the oral exam.
